Back 2 the Trenches Report

On Sunday 20th September, nine members of our staff team and volunteers took on the Back 2 the Trenches Extreame Mud Run in Redhill.

They scrambled, climbed, ran, ducked, swam, waded, splashed, crawelled, climbed, bashed, fell, and generally had an amazing time over 5km of mud and hills to rasie money for EW YMCA's Changing Life fund.

The changing life fund was developed to stream money to projects and core services that allow us to work with and change the lives of many in our area.

A huge thank you to the team who took part and to all those who have given to the fund.

You can still donate on our myDonate page here if you would like to give to the team's efforts.

Thank you.

Fun Afternoon Enjoyed By All

We held our 2nd Annual Y3A (YMCA Third Ages) training day at the University of Brighton’s Sports Centre on Wednesday 13th May.

The day brought together a fantastic combination of university students and residents from local retirement, care and nursing homes. 35 residents participated accompanied by 25 students all ranging from 18-102 years old! The activity afternoon involved a mixture of exercise, skill development, fun target games and teamwork challenges.

During refreshments after many residents remarked what a wonderful afternoon they had enjoyed, with one resident asked if the event could be arranged more often!

We would like to thank The Hawthorns, Sunrise, The Pentlow, Manor Hall, The Devonshire & Ravelston Grange for escorting their residents to the afternoon.

From September there are now several students doing their voluntary Sports degree placements with Y3A. This continues the good relationship between EWYMCA, Brighton University Sports Department and the current 28 retirement, care and nursing homes that Eastbourne and Wealden YMCA currently provide Y3A sessions for.

The creativity and enthusiasm that the students bring to the Y3A Retirement Activity sessions are wonderful.

Y3A at Pentlow Nursing Home

Not only does keeping active help all of us remain young at heart, but fitness is an excellent way to feel good and enjoy a positive mental attitude. This is obviously very important for all of our residents.
So, what are some of the benefits that are experienced at Pentlow Nursing Home and what do our residents think about our weekly YMCA visits from young and enthusiastic professionals?
Keeping active is a great way to to maintain a positive outlook on life while allowing our residents to challenge themselves with the support of our staff and trained professionals from the YMCA. This also reminds us all that youth is more of a state of mind than a physical condition; we can be energetic at any age!
Pentlow Nursing Home is proud to be able to offer weekly fitness challenges which will award one lucky winner a gold cup which will be kept until the following competition takes place (during the next week). Not only is this a wonderful source of pride, but such events tap into the child within us all!
In fact, one resident said: "It's nice to have young people come and help us keep fit!"
Of course, all levels of fitness are completely dependent upon the individual and trainers will take a one-on-one approach when helping our residents achieve their goals. Physical stimulation is just as important as mental stimulation and Pentlow Nursing Home is happy to provide both to our family of residents.

Our new branding launches...

On Friday 18th July we were delighted to launch the new identity and branding of Eastbourne and Wealden YMCA. Guests, trustees and staff attended a breakfast held at Willingdon Golf Club, where we showed our new video, website and literature.

It was great to share stories of our work, and to make new connections with people who didn't know much about us! We hope that this new website and literature will help us further raise the profile of the charity and give local people a better understanding of the work that is being done right on their doorstep.

Our thanks go to the staff who gave up their time to be there, especially first thing in the morning, and all our guests who were so positive about and supportive of the charity

Wise Up girls go shopping on a budget!

As part of a healthy eating project, girls from the Langney Wise Up group visited Tesco at Langney Shopping Centre for a "shopping basket challenge". It was great fun and they did brilliantly on a budget!

The girls were divided into pairs, given a budget of £5 and asked to shop for a day's meals. They had to consider ensuring a balanced menu with food from all food groups. I was delighted when the first section they went to was the fruit and veg!! Following the shop we were given a dedicated till by the lovely staff and the girls had the experience of operating the till themselves.

All of the girls made great choices and all came in on or around budget (without the use of calculators or phones). We asked our nominated staff member to chose the healthiest basket  which was a hard task as all the girls had chosen really well. We all had a wonderful time and it was made so much better by Andy and his team at Tesco. Thank you!

Triumph at Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival!

Young people and staff from our community projects participated in the Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival for the second year running - and this year were delighted to be awarded the Best in Show accolade for our eye catching, colourful float!

The Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival is a great event in the town which gives us the opportunity to promote Eastbourne and Wealden YMCA and to showcase the talents of the young people we work with.

This year, the carnival theme was Rio by the Sea and over 60 youn  g people from across our projects were involved in making all decorations and costumes, and transforming our float into a jungle of colour! They had a blast walking the two mile route smiling and shaking buckets, accompanied by our Music Group who entertained spectators all the way!

Everyone involved had a ball - in their own words - the carnival was...

"...a great experience for young people to get to try something new" Hannah 21

" ...a real confidence building experience and a day I will remember forever" Zara age 20

"...the best day ever"  Michael age 14

"We are really proud and pleased we won, it really was worth all the work we did" Everyone

"We really enjoyed performing on the float it's a really brilliant experience" The music group
